#1 - Diseases of the digestive system of agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina) raised in captivity in the Brazilian semiarid region

Abstract in English:

The objective of this study was to describe the clinical and pathological aspects of diseases of the digestive system in agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina Linnaeus, 1758) diagnosed by the “Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária” (Veterinary Pathology Laboratory) of the “Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido” (UFERSA), from January 2018 to February 2020. During the study period, necropsy and a survey of the clinical history of 27 agoutis were performed, 25.93% (7/27) of which were diagnosed with digestive system diseases. The percentages of digestive tract diseases among the diagnosed were: acute carbohydrate overload (11.12%), gastric ulcer (7.41%), gastric volvulus (3.70%), and intestinal volvulus (3.70%). Studies on the occurrence rate of these diseases, as well as the description of their clinical and anatomopathological aspects, may serve as a basis for guiding the appropriate management in the breeding of these animals.

#2 - Digestive disorders associated with the consumption of palm fiber (Elaeis guineensis) in feedlot cattle

Abstract in English:

Digestive disorders in cattle are associated with the breeding system and feed provided to the animals. Abomasal compaction is primarily related to the ingestion of forage with elevated levels of lignin, low quality, and difficult digestibility. In addition, the excess of fibrous food in the diet can lead to phytobezoars that may be responsible for intestinal obstruction disorders. This study aimed to describe pathological and clinical aspects of an outbreak of digestive disorders associated with the consumption of palm fiber (Elaeis guineensis). The outbreak struck a herd of 499 animals raised in a feedlot system after a change in diet that included an increase in the amount of palm fiber. Forty (8.01%) animals showed clinical signs such as fattening and regurgitation during rumination, and 21 (4.2%) animals died later. The cattle affected presented with apathy, emaciation, dehydration, distended abdomen, incomplete or absent ruminal movements, and congestive mucosa. Three animals were submitted to necropsy, and distended rumen and reticulum has a large amount of brownish liquid, long and tangled vegetable fibers with sand and stones. In two animals, the omasum had many rounded structures measuring approximately 5cm in diameter, made of vegetable fiber (phytobezoars). Abomasum of animals had similar material to the rumen, and one animal had compressed content. In two animals, dilatation was observed in the small intestine, and in the opening, the total obstruction of the lumen by phytobezoar was observed. During the follow-up of the slaughter of 76 cattle, 15 (19.7%) had phytobezoars of different sizes in the omasum and abomasum. The increased amount of oil palm fiber in animal feeding favored the occurrence of compression abomasum and intestinal obstruction phytobezoa, causing significant economic losses.

#3 - Digestive diseases of cattle from the semiarid of Brazil

Abstract in English:

Digestive problems are important causes of diseases in cattle and studies on the frequency of its occurrence in the semiarid region of Brazil have not been conducted. The aim of this study was to acquire information on the occurrence of digestive diseases of cattle attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande from January 2000 to December 2014. During the period of the survey 1,202 cattle were attended, from which 19.4% (233/1202) were diagnosed with digestive disorders. The lethality rate of the diseases was 49.8% (116/233). Traumatic reticulitis and vagal indigestion were diagnosed respectively in 13.3% e 5.1% of the animals treated being considered common and high lethality motor disorders, which were attributed to the severity of injuries, delay in the clinical care and inaccurate diagnoses. Obstruction of the intake flow, caused by esophageal obstruction (4.3%), rumen impactations (11.7%), omasum and/or abomasum impaction (3.4%), and especially intestinal accidents (26.2%) was a commonly identified condition, and its case totality exceeded the number cases of ruminorreticular cavity fermentative disorders. Actinobacillosis (6.9%), actinomycosis (3%) and paratuberculosis (1.7%) were the bacterial infectious diseases diagnosed, and the first was the most frequent. Viral infectious diseases diagnosed were malignant catarrhal fever (4.3%), bovine viral diarrhea and mucosal disease (3%). Despite the management systems with low animal density and climatic conditions of the region do not favor the survival of gastrointestinal parasites, parasitic diseases were also important causes of morbidity in young cattle (9.4%), suggesting that suitable control measures for those diseases have not been implemented Motor disorders of the ruminoreticular cavity, followed by intestinal obstructions and digestive infectious diseases are the most frequent digestive problems of cattle in the semi-arid region of Brazil. The ingestion of foreign bodies is one of the most serious problems in the region and intense work is needed to disseminate it on prophylactic measures. In addition, measures for the control and prophylaxis of infectious diseases such as bovine viral diarrhea and paratuberculosis need to be disclosed, due to the possibility of dissemination of these diseases in the herds of the region.

#4 - Diseases of the digestive system of sheep and goats in the semiarid region of Brazil, 33(2):192-198

E-mail: aquilavet@yahoo.com.br Diseases of the digestive system of goats and sheep in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil were evaluated by a retrospective study of 2,144 attendances of small ruminants in the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Patos, Paraíba, from January 2000 to December 2011. The records were reviewed to determine the occurrence, epidemiology, and the main clinicopathological features of the gastrointestinal diseases diagnosed during the studied period. Out of a total of 512 cases (23.9%) of gastrointestinal disorders in small ruminants, 367 (71.7%) occurred in goats and 145 (28.1%) in sheep. Gastrointestinal helminthiasis and coccidiosis were the most frequent diseases (330 cases). The disorders of the rumen and reticulum (acidosis, simple indigestion, bloat, and ruminal compaction) constituted 94 cases. The abomasum was affected by primary and secondary ulcers, and obstruction and compression of the gastrointestinal tract were also observed. Malformations, such as anal atresia and cleft palate were recorded in both species, the latter being associated with ingestion of Mimosa tenuiflora. Among the infectious diseases, five outbreaks of contagious ecthyma, two cases of paratuberculosis, and two cases of gastrointestinal pythiosis were observed. Suspected seven cases of enterotoxemia and nonspecific enteritis were identified. The lack of an integrated control of parasites and the use of inadequate food during the period of lack of forage contributes to the occurrence of a great number of gastrointestinal diseases in small ruminants in the studied area. The practice of conservation of fodder could substantially reduce the occurrence of digestive disorders in the semiarid region.

ABSTRACT.- Gabriel A.L., Kommers G.D., Masuda E.K, Fighera R.A., Piazer J.V.M., Barros C.S.L., Martins T.B. & Rosa F.B. 2009. [Clinical and hematological aspects and urinary bladder lesions in chronic spontaneous poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle.] E-mail: glaukommers@yahoo.com Spontaneous cases of chronic poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle were studied. The clinical forms of the disease were squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs) of the upper digestive tract (UDT) and bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH). The cases were from the midland Region of the Midwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and were submitted to the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Clinical signs and blood work were evaluated at terminal phase of disease. Cattle with UDT SCCs had progressive weigth loss, ruminal atony, cough, dysphagia, bloating, and regurgitation. In cattle with BEH, hematuria was observed in all cases, followed by progressive weight loss. Non-regenerative anemia was detected in 33.33% of the cattle with UDT SCCs form and in 66.66% of the cattle with BEH form. Changes in white blood count occurred in some cases but drop in lymphocyte numbers was uncommon in both forms of disease. For the morphological study, urinary bladders from 46 cattle with UDT SCCs and 11 cattle with BEH were analyzed. Grossly, 16/46 bladders from the UDT SCCs form had gross lesions (red or pale vesical nodules, hemorrhages, and papilomas; red urine was detected at necropsy of only three cases). In BEH form, the bladder had nodules, large neoplastic masses, red urine, papilomas, and hemorrhages. Pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis were seen in a few cases. Microscopically, in the UDT SCCs form, 44/46 (95.65%) bladders had 22 different types of morphological changes, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/22) and non-neoplastic lesions (17/22); the latter were subdivided in non-neoplastic epithelial changes (6/17), general changes of the lamina propria (6/17), and inflammatory changes (5/17). The bladder changes in BEH form were of 19 different types, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/19) and non-neoplastic lesions (14/19), which were subdivided in non-neoplastic epitelial changes (9/14), general changes of the lamina propria (3/14), and inflammatory changes (2/14). In BEH, mesenchymal neoplasms were more observed than epithelial ones, and most of them were malignant. Immunohistochemistry was utilized to characterize the histogenesis of poorly differentiated neoplasms. In conclusion, the morphological study demonstrated that urinary bladder lesions identical to the those seen in cattle with BEH, are very often present in cattle with the UDT SCCs form.
